Locations - For my locations, I will either be taking my photo's at home or at college as it will be easier for me to get both places and won't have to use more time to find other locations. I will need to get permission to be able to take the photos in the locations I am choosing.

Contributor - I will need to get a friend to help me take some of my photo's for my magazine but, the rest of my photo's, I will do the rest of the photo's myself.


Equipment - For this project, my main piece of equipment will mainly be a camera and a tripod for photographs for both the front cover and double page spread. I will have drumsticks as a prop for the dominant image on the front.

Cost - The only thing that I have had to pay for, for this assignment is the drum sticks because I needed a prop that could show people what the magazine is about just by looking at the front cover.

Pre-Production

What is pre-production and what is it important in the film making process?

Pre-production is a very important stage for any movie or TV show, without this stage everything during the practical stage can go wrong and end up with a terrible product to be released to the public. Every film must go through this stage as it is one of the most crucial stages of movie making and probably one of the most irritating stages.

Before a movie is made, there is a process called pre-production where the producers, the crew, the cast and the director etc have to think about all of the important subjects that will need to be discussed for the movie. These subjects that must be discussed include:

Finance:

On a high budget movie for example Avatar, money is crucial as there is so much that needs to be paid for from the equipment to the cast. These need to be discussed in detail because they need to know how much to pay each cast and crew member (cast will earn more), how much the equipment will cost, including cameras, microphones and lights etc. The set/area will have to be paid for by the staff of the movie so that everyone has a place to work during the production of the movie.

For all of these purchases to be possible and available for the making and production of the movie, they have to be able to acquire the money to be able to pay for everything. The best way to acquire this money is through sponsorships (also known as product placement) for example: Heineken paid 45M USD to be in the James Bond film SkyFall. If the movie is successful, then brands will want to work with you more often because your film has given their product and company publicity. It is beneficial because the studio will have to put up less money towards their film.

The British Film Institute (BFI) helps out film makers by offering grants (they get their funding through the national lottery). The BFI unlike any other institute, will offer grants to new/young film-makers, this is because as a first time film maker it is very difficult to receive funding and your completed film might not be good or very profitable which makes the BFI the best recommendation as they don't rely on the films success as their money comes through public funding, people who buy lottery tickets are basically sending their money to the BFI to use for loans and grants. Back in 2015, the BFI funded a film called "The Testament of Youth" which has a variety of well known actors such as Game of Thrones' Jon Snow (A.K.A Kit Harrington), Taron Egerton, Colin Morgan and Hayley Atwell and many more actors/actresses. This shows that the BFI funds some popular and well received films as 'Testament of Youth' received a claim from critics.

Shooting Schedule:

A shooting schedule, is basically a timetable for each day of shooting a film but there are a few things that need to be considered for this for them to benefit everybody involved in the movie because if one of the actors involved with the movie is also filming a part for another film, there will be days when he/she cannot make it to the shoot and could push production back ever so slightly. Another part of shooting schedules is also to make sure that even the crew is available for the times of filming or just like the cast, the film could also delay the release and completion of the film.

Location Scouting:

For every film and TV show in the world, the crew has to be able to find a location to either film certain scenes or the entire film, once they find a location/ all locations, they have to make sure that they're available during certain time periods and if the locations are not available at these times they can either re-schedule to make it possible to film in that location or, they can move on and try to find a new location to film in to complete their film or TV shows.

Recce/Risk Assessment:

There are many risks on the sets of a film, not just to the cast but also the crew who do everything to make a film possible are in as equal danger as the cast of the film. There have been many stories and cases of crew members being injured or killed due to lack of safety precautions either on the set or behind the cameras and this is why safety is one of the most important topics of conversations and meetings during the pre-production phase of movie making.

Many of the things that go bad on sets of movies can endanger everybody involved with the movie and many of the accidents happen e.g. the sets could collapse because they haven't been built properly, stuntmen could be involved with stunts that can go wrong which would put them in more danger than they're in and even the explosives expert could set up an explosion wrong and kill or injure a few people in proximity of the explosion's that he has set up for the scene. Being involved in movie making, can bring as many risks as it brings as many rewards for those involved and can also favour their career for future films.

Storyboards:

Storyboards, are used in the pre-production stage of film making because they provide a visual aid for each scene of the film so that the crew knows exactly how each scene should look. They use very basic drawings and sometimes the draw boxes around a certain part so that the cameramen know exactly which part of the scene to focus on. This will also stop confusion as to where to place everything in the scene as the sketches will show the crew where everything must go to make the scene possible and to help complete the movie.

Another part of storyboards that is used, is that the artists also write a brief synopsis of what is happening in each scene under each drawing as another way for the crew to know exactly what is happening and makes it easier as a whole. Some or most of the artists, annotate their storyboards to include a few more little detail's for each scene.

Sound is also included in the storyboard process as it will help the crew decide if the sound will be diegetic or non-diegetic sound for each scene.

The producer of  film, will need a copy of the storyboard so they can analyze the scenes and decide which scenes throughout the duration of movie will require special effects. Another reason they need a copy of a storyboard so that they can also decide, which scenes may require extras for background roles of the movie.

Shot List:

The shot list links to storyboards as when an artist draws a scene, they will make the actors and the objects in the scene smaller to make it look like a long shot and if they want the camera to zoom in on a specific area, they will draw the scene but include a box with the arrow either pointing inside the box to zoom in on that specific area or the arrows point outwards to represent zooming out from a certain area. The artists, will do this for most or all scenes of a movie to help the crew make everything the artist has done possible for the scene to improve the overall film and scene as a whole and could also mean that the film ends up with better reviews and higher box office score as well as improving everybody's career who were involved in the film.

Script:

A script is needed quite early in the pre-production stage of movie making, as it gives the crew a sense of a story and also so the artists can draw a rendition of each scene to then pass on to the rest of the crew so that each scene can be built and set up in the way that would match the story of the film. They'll also need a script for pre-production as at some early stage of the process, they will begin auditions for the lead role and smaller roles that will need to be included in the movie. A script is important as a whole as it is the backbone of the entire project as without a script, you barely have a movie let alone a pre-production stage.

Cast/audition:

During the process of the set building and storyboarding, there is an audition stage of pre-production where the producer, director and maybe some of the crew will sit in an office and will get people to come in one by one to audition for a specific role. During each audition, there will be someone who reads a a line and gets the actor/actress to respond to the line and react in the way that matches the previous line and the situation of the scene perfectly or in a way that the producer and director like for a chance at landing the role.

A Quiet Place - Review

A Quiet Place - Review

A Quiet Place is director John Krasinski's third film in his directorial portfolio making it his most successful film to date, with the budget of 17-21 Million and recieving 338.6 Million USD at the Box office.

One of the main reasons I like this film, is because of how original it is and how the lack of dialogue can make a modernized film as successful as it is. Another thing about this film that I really like is that John Krasinski had two jobs in this film, not only did he just have to direct everyone behind the camera but he also played one of the main protagonists in the film. I find it clever how the creatures in this film have sound as their strength but, we find out about half way into the film that it's also their biggest weakness.

I really enjoyed the effects and make-up for this film, specifically the creature's facial muscles and how they move when they are listening for any slight sound to attack. When these creatures are searching for any sound, we can see each muscle on their face moving with control but they also shake when they under distress or hear a sound which is too high pitched.

Overall, I really enjoyed this film and cannot think of anything that I dislike about it, where some people would find the film boring because of the lack of dialogue, I find it unique as no modern film has so little dialogue and everyone that has seen the film, will understand why dialogue is so scarce in this film. This film is undoubtably one of my favorite horror films because of how different it is to out or all horror films.

For this project,  we have been asked analyze two films from two genres to make the total of four films analyzed. We must also analyze the codes and conventions for this film and the genre in total. For section two of this project I will analyze the narrative theory e.g. writing about the equilibrium. For this project



Fight Scene 1 - Ip Man - Martial Arts movie

One of the first things we can notice is that the colour in this scene is very bland and only has two colours, black and white which could imply that the creators cared more about the story than the colours and brightness of the film.

Mise - en - Scene

Costumes:

In this scene, Donnie Yen (Ip Man) is seen to be wearing black whereas the Japanese Martial Artists are seen to be wearing the traditional Karate uniform colour of white. This a physical representation that shows the audience that Donnie Yen stands out not just by his skill compared to the Japanese but, this could also be representation of the war between the countries of China and Japan during this time period. The costumes in this scene also link to the lighting and the set because the lighting is white and the set is very bland is it all plain colours which also help with story as it tells the audience that the is a dark period in Chinese history. Since Ip Man's clothes make him stand out, we also notice that he is not Japanese but their enemy... a Chinese.

Lighting:

The lighting in this scene has been done cleverly as the light seems to have a white glow to it which reflects well off the Japanese warriors which helps them stand out it also allows Donnie Yen to stand out black on a white floor covering so he is almost like a shadow which makes sense as he is moving very fast. The reason the lighting in this scene is clever is because the room is full of windows which suggests that the lighting in this scene is natural light caused by the sun which is coming though the windows lighting up the set.

Set:

The set for this scene has been created to copy a 20th Century Japanese DoJo or a combat arena where people spectate other people fighting for entertainment or to discover who could be a possible threat to the Japanese Empire. The set has also been created to look neutral in color and decoration as the color scheme for this scene is very plain because it either uses black, white or grey for the colors which also tells the audience that Japanese Empire might not care about the look and style of Chinese architecture and find it to be inferior to their own building techniques and style. The set also links to the costumes of the actors in this scene as all of the most of the costumes are either black or white with the acceptation of the soldiers who are wearing brown, this is to show their superiority upon everyone else in this scene.

Make-up:

The make up in this scene is quite complex as they had to make Donnie Yen look filthy this is to inform the audience that he is poor and probably struggling to survive in Japanese China. On top of the dirt make up, they also had to add make up to look like sweat to show that China is very warm and the set is also probably very warm as he is indoors and the film is set in the early 1900s, they did not have air conditioning to keep themselves cool. Later on in this scene, we can see that Donnie Yen has been fighting and is sweating even more, this shows us that he has been moving quickly and has used more energy. the audience can also notice there is a lot of blood all over the set which indicates that during this fight, there has been hits on the Japanese fighters which have been strong enough to draw blood and a lot of it. At the end of this scene we see the camera move down Donnie Yen's arm to his hand where we can see a fist but the main part of this is that is knuckles are cut and bloody which shows everyone that he has used his fists out of rage and revenge against the Japanese but, his hand is also shaking this could be a physical representation to tell the audience that after everything the Japanese have done to his people, Ip Man still feels remorse for what he just did to the Japanese fighters.

Choreography:

The choreography for this scene must have been a challenge to film as it is really fast and intense, the way Donnie Yen and the Japanese warriors are jumping around at each other trying to land any hits to their opponent(s), would not have just been a challenge for the crew to film but also a challenge for the actors as they had to remember where to stand specifically at each segment of the scene and what moves to do to counter their opponents attack. Another part about their positioning in this scene, is that they had to make sure they stood with enough distance from each other so that they didn't actually hit one another by accident during the filming.

Sound/Foley:

The sounds used throughout this scene have been made in a way that does not sound like it is happening naturally but has actually been edited over as when Donnie Yen is hitting the Japanese, it sounds like someone has been hitting a slab of meet to create this sound effect, we call this "Foley" it is actually very noticeable in this scene and throughout the rest of the film because none of the hits sound like what they would from a camera microphone. One sound effect that I'm still confused about is how they were able to create the sound of bones breaking in this scene as Donnie Yen/Ip Man broke an arm, leg and shoulder and the crunching and breaking to pieces. The incredible thing about this sound effect is how realistic they were able to make the sound because the sound effect plus the type of fight scene this is, the bone breaking sound adds a more brutal element to this scene and film. The backing-track to this scene fits so well as it gives off a warrior type soundtrack and in this film he basically becomes some form of resistance fighter and just as the fighting begins, the music gets louder as well as quieter when the fighting concludes.

Codes and conventions

Ip Man follows the main Martial Arts codes and conventions because one of the main points is that these genres normally include a protagonist who is highly skilled in his/her style of Martial Arts. One of the main conventions in this film is called the "Teacher-student dynamic" because in this film Ip Man keeps reminding his friends that he does not wish to have a student and prefers to train in his style of Kung Fu "Wing Chun" alone and undisturbed.

1. At the start of Ip Man, grand master Ip, is a well respected wealthy martial artist who refuses to teach anyone in his form of martial arts (Wing Chun). His wife is constantly mad at him for his love for his martial arts and believes he cares about his fighting more than his family.

2. The Japanese army invades China in 1938 and takes over the entire country, Ip Mans home is taken  away from him and s turned into Japan HQ for Fo Shan leaving Ip and his family poor and starving on the streets of Fo Shan.

3. Ip Man and his family is struggling to survive in their new world, Ip no longer practices his martial arts as he is trying to be a better husband and father. Due to this change, his wife is no longer mad at him as he does no longer fight.

4. Ip Man starts fighting again but this time he is angry and fights the Japanese and making it difficult for the General who is in charge of Fo Shan to keep everything in order and dishonoring him in the process. in the end Ip Man fights the General in a social environment with spectators. Ip Man wins the fight but the General's second in command shoots Ip Man.

5. After being shot, the Chinese fight back against the Japanese whilst Ip Man's wife, son and friend smuggle the injured fighter out of Fo Shan and heads to Hong Kong to make a new life.



Fight Scene 2 - Batman VS Superman - Action Movie

Before this fight even really begins, Batman can be seen flying his aircraft around a port using weapons to blow up vehicles and his opponents. This small part gives us a brief synopsis of the brutality is about to occur, this also could surprise many viewers as Batman is not normally the hero we associate with killing his enemies but we can tell that this version of Batman is not above killing, he does it when he feels it necessary.

Mise - en - Scene

Costumes:

Obviously with a superhero/action movie, the good guy normally wears a mask to conceal his identity to protect himself and the people he cares about. In this case, we instantly picture Batman wearing a cowl with bat ears on them with a utility belt and a bat emblem on his chest. The point of the cowl, is from Batman's fear of bats and he uses this fear to strike his fear into the hearts of his enemies. The bad guys in this scene are wearing the generic goon costumes, mostly black with a black hat with scruffy beards and possibly scars to make them look meaner and tougher.

Lighting:

The lighting for this scene is pretty good as you can see and understand everything that is happening, the lighting is high-key because on top of being able to see everyone clearly on the screen, we can also see their movements clearly which would be harder to see and follow if it was the use of low-key lighting. The lights seem to be a whitish colour with a green tint to it maybe to suggest that these lights have gotten covered by something over time which could also tell us that the building is old.

Set:

The set for this scene, is very stereotypical of bad guys because it is set in mostly on one floor of an abandoned warehouse which is where most bad guys hideout in movies as the cops never search abandoned warehouse until last minute or until it's too late. Throughout the scene, we can see multiple crates around the area with these people being criminals we can only assume that the crates are either filled with high end guns or explosives or even artifacts that they are importing illegally. Another point about the set looking old is that all of the walls look broken and seem to be getting worse and the entire room seems really dusty which also tells the audience that these people don't really care about how clean their lair is.

Make-up:

There doesn't seem to be much make-up seen during this seen mostly just sweat and in the occasional times you can see a little bit of blood which shows the audience that these people have been hit harder than we thought by either Batman or an object he has used on his targets.

Choreography:

The choreography in this fight scene is immense as Ben Affleck (Batman) has been made to look unnaturally strong compared to the criminals because he throws a massive crate which most people couldn't lift and punches a guy into the ground so hard he breaks the wood beneath him. Also with it being one man against 20 other men, in a confined space it must have been hard to get everyone in the right positions without tripping over each other. Towards the end of this scene, Batman does take a few hits and this seems to really make him mad as he is probably not used to getting hit and it makes him hit harder and probably kill a few of the remaining hostiles.

Sound/Foley

The backing-track to this scene is dark which connects with the Batman suit because the suit is dark and looks very menacing compared to most of the previous Batman suits. The music also fits to the scene is brutal and aggressive and it kind of reflects on the anger of Batman in a way that tells us that when Batman gets angrier, the music gets more threatening or louder etc. The sound effects used for the punches and kicks in this scene sound more realistic than Ip Man, this has been done maybe to make the film more realistic. They have also done a good job at making the sounds match and sync to the attacks perfectly.They have also used the generic gunshot sound effects for this scene which also sync to the every flash from the barrel of the machine guns and pistols.

Codes and conventions

Batman VS Superman follows the codes and conventions of action movies as it includes fighting and puts Batman through physical threats as he is fighting a warehouse full of criminals and he fights them on his own. This film also follows the codes and conventions as it has heroes: Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, this film also has an antagonist the infamous Lex Luthor. The theme is a huge part of the codes and conventions as the main theme for this film is the traditional "Good VS Bad".

1. The world at the start of Batman VS Superman, is in complete chaos there are wars everywhere and the crime rates are at an all time high. People including Batman don't trust Superman and thinks he is doing more harm than good.

2. Lex Luthor gets involved and detonates a bomb inside the Capitol Building, Washington D.C whilst Superman is inside the building leaving the world thinking Superman was the reason for this unexpected act of terrorism.

3. Batman believes that Superman was involved with the Capitol Building and calls Superman out for a fight that he intends to win by killing Superman as he believes that Superman is one of the causes of the worlds problems.

4. Batman realizes that Superman is on their side and that they both share a common foe, Lex Luther who has been playing them both in a metaphorical game of chess. They team up along side Wonder Woman to defeat Lex Luther's monstrous creation, Doomsday which they manage to defeat but with the loss of Superman.

5. After the death of Superman, the world comes t some kind of peace, Batman and Wonder Woman go their separate ways but keep in touch on the subject of finding the others who will soon become members of the Justice League.

Comparison

Both of these films are unique in their own way but there are many differences between the two of them. One of the biggest differences is that Batman VS Superman is a story which has been created by writers for the entertainment of fans whereas, Ip Man is based off the true story of the Grand Master Ip Man A.K.A the man who taught the legend Bruce Lee. Ip Man is not a very dark film but it has got its moments where it could almost be classed as a dark film but, Batman VS Superman is a darker film as see both Batman and Superman kill someone at some point during the movie which contradicts their original characters from the DC Comics because none of these characters in the comics ever killed someone, they never allowed themselves to go as far as killing but this film goes against that and they do kill without remorse. Ip Man at the start of the film is a happy film and you can see that Ip Man does not like to teach and does not use his fists in fights because he doesn't need to be aggressive. But, during this fight scene he finally has enough and gets aggressive and from here the film gets a bit darker but then gets a brighter ending when the people of Fo Shan rise up against the Japanese army after Ip Man defeats the Japanese General.

The story for this film, is based on the real events of Ip Man's life but like most true story films, it has probably been altered in one way or another to make the film more entertaining for the audience and maybe to get people to spread the word about the film to create publicity. With this being based of true events, they cannot alter the story too much otherwise it is more of a fictional movie rather than an informative one which means that the director and producer etc cannot be as creative with this film as they could be with may other films. Whereas, in Batman VS superman, this film is based off comic book characters which means that the director, producer etc more creative freedom as they do not have to stay close to any story-line of real events and can make up completely anything they want for this film. With the film based on true events, it may surprise multiple people when they learn that Ip Man taught martial arts to the famous Bruce Lee, if people aren't surprised by this they might be interested because they learned something more about Ip Man. Ip Man had reached a status that many martial artists never reach, "Grand Master". Whereas in Batman VS Superman is completely made up and in this film, Batman and Superman are known for killing their enemies when  necessary but, this will surprise many people who know the characters as they never really kill people in the comics. This shows that many directors for example Zack Snyder, goes against DC Comics and makes their characters someone who we don't recognize.

Both films include Todorov's equilibrium theory about how everything is normal, then something happens and we know it has happened, there is an attempt to fix the changes and then at the end everything has calmed but there are slight changes to the environment. The theory can be seen more within each films analysis above.

These two films, have very different character types because in Ip Man all of the Chinese people are very prideful and full of honor whereas in Batman VS Superman, there are multiple superheroes who don't hold back their punches and really try to kill their enemies either by choice or even if they have no choice they will kill someone which is not as honorable. Both films include characters who are ready to fight for either themselves, home town, city or even country as it shows that all characters in both films are dedicated to their people and will do anything to protect them. These films include the character theory from Vladimir Propp, in Ip Man the characters that link to the theory are "The Hero" Ip Man is the hero of this film because he beats the Japanese General and restores the hope to the citizens of Fo Shan. Ip Man also includes "The Villain" which is the General who is in charge of Fo Shan and makes the lives of the Chinese horrible. The General also uses another character which is "The Helper" which is the Japanese soldiers behind the General who help him to maintain order in Fo Shan.



Horror Scene 1 - Wrong Turn 5 - Football Pitch

The every first thing we notice about this scene, is that both of the characters are on the ground and are panicking and also trying to find someone. We also notice that one of the characters is buried in the ground with only his head about the surface which indicates he is in danger.

Mise - en - scene

Lighting:

for this scene, like most horror films there is the use of low-key lighting as it is night time and very dark on this football pitch. The only real source of light that we get is the lights on the roof of the grass cutter that the cannibal is using to kill his victims in this scene. There is also a tiny bit of natural light in this scene but it is not that strong compared to the lights on the grass cutter so the natural lighting is poor which also links to the low-key lighting.

Set:

This scene takes place on an empty football pitch with only one empty looking building behind it. The reason the football pitch is empty, is so there are no witnesses to the murders that are about to happen on this field. The reason the cannibal chose this specific location to kill these two people, is so that he could have an easy enough terrain to dig a hole in to place one of the victims in as well as, having enough space to be able to turn the grass cutter around to kill both of the people at the end of the scene.

Make-up:

There is a tiny bit of make-up on the victims at the start of the scene showing dirt and blood to show that they are in a muddy place but that they have also been hurt in some way to leave evidence. Most of the make-up i this scene has gone onto the cannibal as he is a result of inbreeding and they creators wanted to physically show the audience the effects of incest and inbreeding within the same bloodlines. Towards the end of this scene, just before we see the last victim die we can see blood squirting all over his face as he is being eating by this machine which is spinning and throwing his blood right back in his face.

Sound/Foley:

There are multiple sounds going on throughout this scene, the main sound being the victims screaming for help from anyone who could hear them or each other. There is also many other sounds during this scene which are not as main as the screaming, like the laughing of the cannibal this is to show us that he enjoys killing and finds it oddly amusing. There is also the sounds of the engine and blades of the grass cutter which has been added so that the audience knows that the last thing the victims will hear is these mechanical sounds getting closer to them in their final moments of life. One sound that is very minor in this scene, is the jingling of the chain one of the victims is locked in because the killer did not want to bury them both and he did not want one to run away so he tied one up with a chain and connected it to the grass cutter so that he could never escape the machine that would eventually kill him.

Codes and conventions 

There is a big use of conventions in this scene one specifically is the use of a secluded location and leaving their characters in a place where there is nobody around to help them. One of the biggest uses of codes and conventions in Wrong Turn is the use of monsters / cannibals because we do not see them as humans only abominations compared to the human race. We also know that in this film series they use blood which, is a huge role in hundreds of horror films because not all horror films are meant to scare people, they have been created so violently that they have to be classed as horror as many people do no like the sight of blood.

1. At the start of Wrong Turn 5, we can see that these college students are in this town trying to have a good time during the towns festival.

2. Everything begins to go wrong when one of the students and an old man is arrested and killings begin to occur throughout the night of the festival which is suspiciously on Halloween.

3. The murders are not known about until one of the students' girlfriend fails to show up at the police station after leaving the motel to visit her boyfriend in prison. This the sparks the rest of the events throughout the rest of the movie.

4. The local sheriff agrees to help the students find their friend on the condition they help keep the old man in prison so that the cannibals don't break him out of prison and continue their monstrous killing spree.

5. After failing to keep the old man in prison, everyone is killed except one of the students who is blinded and kidnapped by the old man and cannibals and is taken to their hideout never to be seen or heard from again.

Horror Scene 2 - Insidious - The Further

The first thing we get from this scene is that this man is looking for someone named Dalton, this man seems really uncomfortable and uneasy, he also looks confused as to what he is meant to do specifically.

Mise - en - scene

Costumes:

The costumes for this scene are pretty simple, as everyone who is dead is wearing old fashioned clothing whereas Josh is wearing more modern clothes and has a lot more colour on then the people of the dead. This is symbolic to show that he is the person here who is still alive whilst everyone around him was alive at some point but is now dead and all wear similar clothing with very little colour.

Lighting:

The lighting for this scene is unnaturally dark which follows the stereotypical lighting for horror films where it is always dark even during the day there still isn't a happy feeling with the light. The most light we actually see is the little light that Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) is carrying so that he can see where he is in "The Further". For this scene, they have had to add small dim lights everywhere just so the audience can see what is in this house and each individual room but, they're still dim enough to make the set really dark and to make the lamp in this scene the dominant light.

Set:

For this scene, the set follows the traditional horror film location; a house that is haunted or cursed but in this scene Josh Lambert is in the realm of the dead so he could be classed as the one haunting the house as he is the only living person walking around the building. We also notice that the house Josh is walking around in, is the house that we are introduced to at the start of the film where all of the Lambert family problems commence for the duration of this film until they finally move to a new house half way through the film. Half way through this scene, Josh goes back downstairs and heads to the living room after hearing whistling and we notice that the furniture is old and a tad bit creepy compared to modern furniture design. The reason for this could be to imply that these spirits have been in the "Further" for a long time. Next we see a woman loading a rifle sitting in the dinning room which once again looks old, suggesting that she is part of the family in the living room.

Make-up:

The make-up for this scene of the film has been done really well, they have doe it in a way to show that all of the people we are seeing in this scene except Josh are dead but, it also shows that they were human at one point. They might have tried to get the dead to resemble themselves in death so that Josh would feel more comfortable in the "Further" and try to get him to stay. The make-up for this scene is also really creepy as when looks back at the living room to see the dead family and they're all stood there and smiling him, we can see how the make-up artists have created these characters to almost look twisted and demented in after death and could also have been done to tell the audience that everyone on the inside is some kind of monster.

Sound/Foley:

There are many different sounds for the duration of this scene of the film but some of the main ones include the sound of emotions. This is because you can hear a woman crying either out of sadness or fear for which could have been how she was feeling when she died. There is a little boy laughing which could be out of joy as he likes to scare people and finds it enjoyable to do so. The father in the living room is whistling while he is reading the newspaper which could have been a habit he did during his life and he could have found it calming, this also could have been what he was doing just before he died. The noise of the rifle being fired just indicates that we know how the family in the living room died and ended up in the "Further". There is the stereotypical noise of creaking doors whenever Josh opens or closes one which happens in a lot of horror movies. The biggest and most important sound for this scene would be the music, this is because every time something creepy happens or there is a jump scare, there is just a sudden loud burst of music which adds to the high tense situation of the character. What is also clever about the music for this scene is that whenever there is a jump scare, there is no music build up to go with it, it just happens when the jump happens which really adds to effect the movie is trying to give the audience.

Codes and conventions
     
There are many codes and conventions for this film like how it takes place in a creepy house that is haunted by the dead, the lighting for this scene is also dark which happens in most horror films to add to the creepy atmosphere. There is the sense of a threat which is very high in this scene as Josh is in the land of the dead and he is alive which could cause every spirit there to attack him. There are sudden jump scares which happen in almost every single horror film, there is also the generic use of some kind of monsters or spirits haunting the location of a movie in this film it is more of a family haunting than a house haunting.

Narrative codes and conventions

1 = state of equilibrium. 2 = disruption of equilibrium. 3 = recognition that the disorder has occurred. 4 = attempt to repair the damage. 5 = return to new equilibrium.

1. The family moves into the house, they go through the expected stress that is expected when they move into a new house.

2. Their oldest son, falls into a coma under unknown causes and creep an unnatural disturbances begin to occur all over the house terrifying the mam.

3. They realize that all of these disturbances have occurred because their son can astral project and has gone to the realm of the dead.

4. Everyone decides to send the dad after their son as he discovers he could astral project. He manages to save his son before the dead can enter his body and return to life and cause acts of evil on the world.

5. The son and dad are safe back in the living world, the only problem is that the dads body has been taken over by one of the spirits from the land of the dead and he kills the woman trying to help the family, this leads into the events of the second movie.

Comparison

These two horror films, are nothing like each other because Wrong Turn is more of a gory type horror film which focuses mostly on the blood and violence more than the actual horror, whereas Insidious is more of a psychological horror which focuses on spirits and aims to scare the audience instead of focusing on the bloodshed. One similarity between the two films is that they both include some kind of monster because Wrong Turn uses inbred cannibals and Insidious uses demons and spirits which is the only thing that really makes these films similar to each other but other than that nothing links these two films together.

Both of these films have been created like a story, mostly to entertain the audience and neither are based off true stories. Insidious is more of a psychological thriller which uses the stereotypical jump scares that most horror films use for entertainment. Whereas Wrong Turn follows closer to the line of Friday the 13th as it is more of a slasher with blood and guts which is for more of the thrill seekers who enjoy blood and guts rather than jump scares and psychological thrillers. One similarity between these two films is that they both follow the ending that is used in hundreds of movies, the cliffhanger, both of the films use cliffhangers as a way for the audience to guess what happens next, this is also done into both films to allow the audience to know that another film is to be made to further the story-line of the main characters or smaller characters. Insidious was created by screen writers who created a story in their head and wrote it down on paper for the enjoyment of others.Whereas Wrong Turn, has been based off a story by Alan B. McElroy who is known for his love of the horror genre, one film that he probably most known for his writing of "Halloween 4 The Return of Michael Myers" which had pretty good reviews which could make Wrong Turn just as good for story-line.

Both films include Todorov's equilibrium theory about how everything is normal, then something happens and we know it has happened, there is an attempt to fix the changes and then at the end everything has calmed but there are slight changes to the environment. The theory can be seen more within each films analysis above. But, in Wrong Turn 5, it does not have such a happy ending as everyone is killed except for one girl who is kidnapped and we can only assume that she dies as we never hear from her again.

Both of these films, have very different character types because in Insidious, everyone tries to be civil and talks about the current problems and maybe what the effects of current actions could be whereas in Wrong Turn, most of the time people just talk about the problem or themselves and don't really care about what might happen to everyone else involved.  These films include the character theory from Vladimir Propp, in Insidious the characters who link to Propp's theory are the "Hero" which is the father who goes into the "Further" to save his son, there is also the "Villain" who is the man with red face who tires to enter the sons body to live again. There is also the "Helper" who comes to the family to guide them into what is happening and also instructs the father on how to get to the Further to save his son. On the other hand, Wrong Turn 5 mostly only has one character type that follows the character theory and that is the "Villain" which is both the cannibals and the old man who do anything and everything they can to kill people for food to continue hunting people for further meals and so on.

Magazine Digital Analysis Learning Aim A

For this project, I will be analyzing a magazine for it main features. The features I will be looking for and analyzing are the codes and conventions, mise-en-scene, target audience etcetera.

Front Cover (Digital)

There are many physical features for a magazine, the dominant image for this cover is Charlie Cox dressed up as "the man in the mask" or "Daredevil", this is used to show that he is the main protagonist but looks more like a vigilante, this will immediately attract an audience from the Marvel fan base, which was last reported to have the majority market share of the superhero franchise. Another thing about the costume is the colour, it is black maybe to show that he is trying to blend into the night and the Urban environment. The mask has no eye holes maybe to represent that he either blind or it hides more of his face or both. The mask could also be a sign that in his personal life he has loved ones and the mask is to hide his identity to keep them safe. The mask also creates a sense of mystery as we want to see who is behind the mask and what he looks without the mask. This also also uses "Hermeneutic code" as the mask keeps his identity a secret and creates the mystery of who is the man behind the mask and why does he wear the mask. Another thing about the mask is that it is that it also uses "Proairetic code" as the mask creates tension as it imply that he wears the mask to  strike fear into people and to let people know that he is not to be messed with. The bottom of the mask has been cut off probably to make it easier to breathe in as well as to stop his voice being muffled when he is interrogating people. From the way his mouth is positioned, we can see that he has no emotion and is very neutral behind the mask and is always very serious when it comes to wearing the mask. The man in the mask has been placed in the foreground, this is to signify that he is the main protagonist of the show. This is also used to show that he is important either in the mask or in his everyday life.

There are multiple qualities of Mise-en-scene in this front cover, for example the background shows part of the Empire State building which tells the audience that this show is set in New York City. Some of the lights are on in the building which implies that it is dark, we also can see it is dark as the background colour is a dark grey indicating that it is the night. Another fact that he is standing in front of a dark background, could suggest that he only wears the mask at night so that he can blend in to the darker areas of New York. The background colour has been lighter than his outfit so that the jet black clothes stand out on the dark grey background, this into make him more noticeable for the dominant image. There is the use of low key lighting, this could be used to show that most of the show is set at night or it could also hint that this show has some dark elements and could also just be trying to tell us that this dark as a whole. As part of his outfit, he has a scruffy, stubbly beard which could indicate that he does not care about how he looks and actually prefers to have a scruffy beard. The stubble could also be used to try and make him look tougher as it looks like he's had a rough time and that is a symbol of his suffering. There are red circles coming towards the reader, it looks like radar and that is kind of how Daredevil sees, he uses sound which allows him to see which acts very similar to radar. This could also suggest that he is looking directly at the reader. There is a distinct light pointed straight onto the man in the mask, it is angled from above this light could be used to represent the moon which could also link to the background and about him only wearing the mask at night.

In front  of the dominant image, the magazine cover has the main title from the TV series with the font used on the title in opening sequence on the show. This is called the "main sell line" this has been used for the audience who have either seen the title somewhere or have actually watched the series as they will instantly recognize it and it will draw in an audience of fans who enjoyed the show. Unlike most of the cover, the shows title is in a colour that does not match the colour scheme of the magazine as all of the other text is either white or blue but the sell line is red. This is also to draw in an audience as the different colour will be appealing to an audience. They have also used the title from the TV show to let people know that they are talking about the TV show and not the film, it is a link to the TV show so anybody who enjoyed the series can read a bit more on the show and maybe how it was made or what it is like on set. A reason for the title being all capitals a part from distinguishing that it is the show's name, is so that it is big and bold which attracts to multiple people so it could be used as a hook to pull people in to read this magazine.

The masthead for this magazine is placed at the top of the magazine and has been created differently compared to most of the other text on the cover, as it is in a larger size and the white writing has a blue glow behind it. Also the masthead has been designed in a different font as it also helps the title of the magazine stand out. The colour's that are used on the masthead are blue and white, this has been done to match the colour scheme from the colours used on the rest of the cover. The dominant image is overlapping the masthead to represent that he is more important than the title of the magazine both physically and figuratively as more people will recognize Daredevil more than the masthead.

There is a mention of Paul Walker on the cover of this magazine which could bring an emotional impact to readers as they will recognize the name and remember what happened to him and will also remember his portrayal of Brian O'Connor in the Fast and Furious franchise. The franchise is the sixth most successful movie franchise which has earned over $5 billion worldwide and it shows the popularity and the mention of Paul Walker will draw in an audience as he was integral to the franchise.

There is a list on the bottom right of the magazine which includes a well known film corporation, 20th Century Fox, this name is just like Paul Walker as everybody knows this company as they have made so many films that pretty much everyone has seen. This piece is mentions their top 50 films, which links to everybody knows the films as their list will probably have very well known and very successful titles included. This has been included as it will draw people into reading the magazine as they will want to know what 20th Century Fox's top 50 films are. This creates a bit of mystery because they only give what the page but not the specific content of the films or where in the list a film is located between 1 and 50. This text also follows the colour scheme of white and blue to help stand out against the dark background, the reason for this like the rest of the white and blue text on the dark background is to stand out and draw in an audience.

In the bottom left, there is a list of actors/actresses and well known titles of movies. These are also used to draw people to read the magazine as they will either recognize 'Margot Robbie' as a name and 'Pitch Perfect 2' as a movie title, like most of the other smaller stories on the cover of this magazine, this story has been used as a lore for an audience. This story also sticks to the colour scheme of this magazine cover as the colours stand out against the background and it also allows reader's to know that the story is in this issue of the magazine, not a different issue.

There is a story on the side about an Australian festival which is most likely an annual event in Australia but, there is no mention of it being a film festival we can only assume that it is due to the fact that they placed it on the cover a film and TV magazine. The word 'sensation' is used on the cover for this story, this could indicate that it is the first festival that the Australia is doing specifically for movies and TV shows.

At the bottom of the magazine, there is mention of Danny Elfman and Tim Burton this is could suggest that the two of them making a movie together as Tim Burton is one of the most famous movie directors of all time with his speciality of creepy/dark films. Another way that we know they're working together is the that the word 'music' is used, this is a reference to Danny Elfman as he creates soundtracks for films and even makes original new songs for some of his films.We can only imagine that these two artists working together would make a dark film with a sinister soundtrack to go with it. On this part of the magazine most of the writing is in white except for the Danny Elfman's name which is in black, this could be to make the line stand out a bit more as it does not follow the regular colour scheme of this cover or it could be to represent that Danny will have a lot to do with making this film darker than Tim might want it to be.

Right at the top of the magazine there is a small brief about one of the stories inside this issue of the magazine and it mentions 'TV highlights' and 'shows adapted from films' this, is a reference to the dominant image (Daredevil) as the Netflix original series began April 10th 2015 and the article is talking about that year. The article also mentions shows from a film and after Marvel made a Daredevil movie in 2003, the film was not a success and they decided to sell the character off to Netflix not knowing how popular and successful the show would become. Marvel still have an input about the show and actually include 'Easter eggs' in the show from other comic books or even names to character and references to the films. They also stick quite closely to the comic books and their stories and they chose a cast who portray their character's immensely and even add a bit more character or character development to their characters which could allow us to believe that this is how they are in the real world which proves they are amazing at their job.

Right underneath the title for the TV show Daredevil, there is a line that says "Marvel and Netflix stage a TV take-down" this could be trying to convince readers to watch the show as the make it sound like this show is dominating Netflix's viewer count as the show could be the best the Netflix original series that has ever been made but they don't say that as a "TV take-down" makes it sound more intense and gripping for any reader or person that sees the magazine and reads this line could instantly want to read this magazine and even watch the TV series as the cover and possibly the make them interested about what happens in the series.





Double Page Spread (Digital)

On this double page spread, we can see Daniel Craig back as the famous British spy 007 AKA James Bond. We can see him in the traditional spy attire, a suit and tie he is also standing in the iconic 007 vehicle, the Aston Martin Db5.

As we can see, Daniel Craig is standing in the foreground gazing at something but we don't know what which gives off the the feeling of mystery, he has one hand in his pocket this could indicate that he trying to grab something or he just having a moments relax and the hand in the pocket is how he is choosing to do it. We can see that he is standing in the middle of the country with nothing around but still chooses to wear his suit and have his tie all tidy. This makes him stand out a lot more than he probably needs to be since he has been trained to blend in to a crowd and the clothes and car go completely against his training about camouflage and trying to blend in like he wants to be seen and noticed.

The phrase "Something old, something new" is also a reference to the dominant image as 'something new' is referring to Daniel Craig as he is the latest James Bond whereas 'something old' is a reference to the car which is the original 007 vehicle which has been part of the franchise since its first appearance in the first James Bond movie "Dr. No" which was released in the year 1963. The Db5 was also released in September 1963 which makes the car the same age as the the 007 movie franchise.

There is not a lot of text on this double page spread which would appeal to the younger readers as they do not want too much and would prefer to look at the picture of James Bond rather than read about him. Whereas older readers would not prefer this as they would probably want to know about the character, actor and maybe what it was like on the set of this film.

There is a small paragraph which mentions the "future of the franchise" which indicates that the creators of the franchise still believe that they can make multiple future films and can continue their success with new films and eventually new actors to portray the super spy. The paragraph also mentions the success of the previous film to Skyfall, Quantum of Solace which was actually a disaster compared to previous Bond films, the word "mauling" was used which suggests that Quantum of Solace was probably the biggest failure of the entire franchise.

Right next the Daniel Craig on this image we can see the title of this James Bond film "Skyfall" with the number 1 above it in a blue box this could suggest that this is either part of a list and has achieved 1st place. Another thing that this could represent is that the number 1 could also be a placement but this could be that this film reached best film of the year and the number just represents it's number 1.




Front cover (Print)

The masthead is very direct for this cover as it is literally called "Martial Arts Illustrated" but it is also good because it allows reader to know exactly what the magazine is about. The included word "illustrated" tells readers that there is pictures and maybe original drawings which is not normally seen in large titled magazines especially martial arts magazines.

The dominant image shows a man looking as if he is in an intense fight but he is seen to be wearing gloves as if he is trying not to hurt his opponent which sends off mixed signals to any reader who might not understand what the gloves are for. You can also see his right and hand moving as if he is either going for an attack or a block to defend himself from an enemies impending attack.

Just to the left of the dominant image, we can see the bar code which is a unique place as they can normally be seen either at the bottom or the back of a magazine not near the top and centre of a magazines cover. We can see the release date just under the bar code and it was released April 2014 we can also see the volume of the magazine and the issue number which is eleven. Also the month and year included could suggest that this is a monthly magazine that goes through stories during each month to give readers more to read and enjoy. Next to the bar code we can see the exact price of this magazine which is £3.95. On the far right of this small panel with the bar code there are small icons of famous social media, these icons are for Twitter and Facebook, this is a clear indication that they want their readers to follow them on social media for updates on stories and upcoming events even before the next issue is released.

At the very top of the magazine, we can see the words "packs a punch" which also tells us that this magazine is about martial arts because it can mean fighting and can also mean that it has an effect on our lives either mentally or physically.

Just beneath the dominant image, we can see the words "pack a punch" again but this time it has the word "how" which could suggest that this magazine instructs readers on how to punch properly without us hurting ourselves in fighting situations.

There is a story about a man named 'Roy Baker' who has been promoted to "Vice President of WAKO Europe" which instantly tells any reader that there will be a big story on this promotion, it could tell us why this man has been granted the title of 'Vice President' and could also include an interview from either the President of WAKO or from Roy Baker who is telling us himself why he was promoted and how he feels about his accomplishment. This story could also tell readers what Roy intends to do with the rest of his career at WAKO.

Just below the story about Roy Baker's promotion, there are three small lines about extra stories inside this magazine with the word 'plus' in front of them. The 'plus' has been given the background colour of red to go with the very minor colour scheme of red and white but also with this background colour it helps the word stand out which will encourage readers to either pick up this magazine or purchase it.

Right at the bottom of the magazine in the left corner, we see a man called Luke Howard doing a Karate move towards the reader/camera. This could be done to make it seem like nobody is safe against this man as he is very experienced in his martial art. We can also see the phrase "Welsh Warrior" which immediately tells the readers which country this man is from and also makes us feel a bit closer to him as we now know a nickname that has been given to him by his peers. We can also see the "Exclusive" which instantly allows readers to know that there is an interview with Luke Howard somewhere in this magazine which would be very interesting to many readers. Both of the words "Exclusive" and "Welsh Warrior", follow the colour scheme of white writing with a red background to attract a readers attention as the red background has white behind it making it and the word inside of it completely noticeable. If you look on Luke Howard's uniform, we can see that he is wearing a black belt which tells anybody that this man is very experienced and has mastered his martial art and looks to be very proud of himself for doing so.

To the right of Luke Howard's story, we can see two men fighting and next to them in big white words we can clearly see the word "Spartan Training". This is interesting as many martial art teachers tell their students not to fight unless necessary but with a word like "Spartan", we get the opposite feeling as the Spartans were aggressive and violent people who fought for everything including their country and their king's and queen's. The picture matches the word "Spartan" as it looks like one man is putting his opponent down hard and making sure that he stays down. Beneath the words "Spartan Training", we can see the words "Strength and conditioning methods" which, could tell the reader that inside this magazine there are tips on how to become stronger and work out in a way that makes your muscles more defined.




Double Page Spread (Print)

The title for this double page story is called "The Tyson Factor" which has been named after the infamous boxer Mike Tyson. The word "Factor", could tell us that this entire story could be about the life of Mike Tyson or just include some facts about his boxing career which a lot of people would probably find interesting to read as they want to know about Mike.

We can see that the dominant image for this story is a pair of boxing gloves or just one glove that has been mirrored to look like a pair to fill up more page space. But, this has been done to tell readers that this story is specifically about boxing and no other form of martial art. Even though the gloves are sideways, they look to placed in the way that a boxer would use his hands when protecting himself from an opponents parry of attacks.

We can see a drop cap just underneath the gloves and this will instruct any reader new or old that this is where they need to start reading from for this story.

Throughout the entire story we get the odd word that has been made bold either to for names or descriptions of a person or an action. This is quite important as most of the bold names are very famous fighters e.g. Mike Tyson and Bruce Lee's names are mentioned as well as the words Kung Fu which also reminds the readers that this is a combat magazine and an instructive magazine also informative as we are learning about a infamous boxer.

Top right corner of these pages, we can see a picture of a poster and we can see the date of "March 26th" and the location of "Madison Square" this is telling us the time and location of boxing match but there are no names to be seen which leaves that feeling of mystery and suspense as we want to know especially from a poster who is fighting in this match.

The page numbers have been included in the usual spot, at the bottom of the page and also have been done in bold this is so that they stand out to the reader, to inform them what page number they are on out of however many pages are in this magazine.

Just underneath the last small paragraph, we can see the name John Broughton, this is obviously the by-line for this story and since we now know who wrote this piece, we can expect that he created the phrase "The Tyson Factor" as he probably did all of his research and probably spent a lot of time researching collecting facts coming up with the phrase and then writing this piece for the magazine. The purpose for his story is to inform people about Mike Tyson and tell us a bit more about the boxing legend.


Evaluation

Positives (Digital)

With digital magazines there are multiple positives such as they are free to get and can be used anywhere. Another positive is that digital magazines is that they're flexible meaning that you can not just use them anywhere, you can use them anytime because they're either on your phone or tablet etc. Digital magazines are inexpensive as they do not cost to print and distribute copies all over the world which saves a lot of money. A great perk about digital magazines is that the publishers can go further and can include videos which obviously can't be done on print magazines. Digital magazines are also environmentally friendly as the do not require paper to be created which saves trees.

Negatives (Digital)

Like most things, there are flaws in digital magazines such as that to access them you either have use your mobile data or be connected to the internet to be able to access and read them. Another disadvantage for digital magazines is that they can sometimes be harder to read, so the readers need to be able to zoom in and out to be able to read it on either their phones or tablets. Another disadvantage to digital magazines is that some companies use outdated which modern technology can't access or run properly.

Positives (Print)

One advantage of print magazines is that they give a physical texture which many older readers would prefer over digital magazines. You also don't have to wait for each article to load and once you have read one article, you can move straight onto the next article without waiting for the next article to load as well. Printed magazines will most likely be taken a lot more seriously by sources. One huge advantage to print magazines, is that when you're going through articles trying to find an interesting article to read, you can come across promotions as well as opportunities that you could take part of and even win awards.

Negatives (Print)

Print magazines have a negative which is a positive for digital magazines, which is that they destroy nature specifically tress to acquire paper to be used for the magazine to be printed onto. A huge disadvantage for printed magazines is that they only appeal to one specific audience whereas digital magazines aim to appeal to every type of audience across the globe.

Overview

Overall, both digital and print magazines are better than each other in their own ways but also have their disadvantages which could work in their rivals favour e.g. how print destroys nature whereas digital saves nature since it is all done on technology. Also print appeals to an older audience so it still gives old people something to do and read whereas digital magazine appeals to younger readers as every young person uses some form of technology mostly mobile phones which they can read magazines on especially into more subjects for example cars, fashion, games and movies etc. It is fair to say that no form of magazine is better than the other as they're unique in their own special ways.

Revenge of the Sith - Analysis Neil - 4/10/18

for this project with Neil, we were tasked with analyzing a scene from a film of our choice. I decided to do the Anakin and Obi-Wan vs Count Dooku from "Star Wars episode III - Revenge of the Sith". I specifically focused on part of the fight where Anakin Skywalker had defeated Dooku and was trying to decide if he should let him live or listen to Palpatine (the Emperor) and kill him. This small scene is actually very important as when Anakin decides to listen to Palpatine, he begins his final descent into the Dark Side of the Force. Anakin immediately feels remorse and guilt for what he did but then decides that it was a big help in ending the war but, it also left Palpatine open for a new apprentice and who better than the man who killed his previous apprentice... Anakin Skywalker, who would later become Darth Vader.

Psycho analysis -
For our lesson today we did a trial analysis on the film Psycho from 1960. We did as much as we could in the 9 minute scene.
