Unit 2: Working in the Creative Industry

The Media Industries

The UK has one of the largest media industries on the planet which has led to many great advancements in media over the last few decades and will continue to do so in the future. Since the beginning of the media industry, there have been many branches of media that have been revealed and became a global sensation that has a genre that appeals to anyone and everyone. Films and television have may branches that can be led from a film or TV show, films can be adapted into TV shows and vise-versa another form of film and TV is animation which is the process of turning drawing or objects into moving pictures to create a sense that it's actually happening with a video camera rather than just photos been taken and pieced together. After films and TV, publishing is a large form of media which has always been a large part to society especially newspapers which were created to inform the public on news of their country, global news so that they can stay up to date with events of the world for those type of people who prefer to read rather than watch TV to learn what is happening in the world. Books have been around for centuries and in the modern day they are still a large part of people's lives because they are written to entertain as well as distract people from the problems of the real world. Many older people prefer books rather than technology as they grew up reading books and have more memories with books and it also adds the feeling of nostalgia from their childhood, spending hours upon hours reading books. Although, in the modern era the internet has become a large and dependable aspect of people's lives that everything has began to covert to a digital format that newspapers and books are starting to become obsolete as you can download newspapers online and can add books to a kindle which takes up less space in luggage if you're travelling. Both digital and print formats have their advantages and disadvantages, for example with films you get a proper visualisation of  what is happening and it can be more enjoyable but you it's better to watch something in one go to gain the full experience of what you're watching whereas with books you can take your time with it and can go back to it whenever you want or can but in some cases, reading can be seen as boring and time consuming.

The Film Industry

Section A

SA - (1)

The film industry has grown exponentially over the years and there has been a higher ad higher demand of jobs that are required within the film industry. In many films today there can be as little as a couple of  hundred of people up to over a thousand people all working on the same film all of these people working in one industry is incredible.

On a set for a film or TV show there is always a director which is probably the largest and well-known role within film and TV.

By definition, a director is "a person who controls the making of a film and supervises the actors and technical crew". The director is one of the most crucial jobs in a film production, without the director the entire production would fall a part. Directors are often put under huge amounts of stress and pressure as everything happens on and off set rests on the directors shoulders, they run everything to make everything run smoothly, they have to storyboard each shot to make it as perfect as it can be, they get involved with everything from the cast to the cameramen to make sure that the shot they're trying to capture is as perfect as it can be, their main role is to take what is happening on paper (script) and transfer what has been written into a feature length film with perfect footage through and through. Many directors have to start from a different role within the industry to build experience and skill to rise through the ranks to make it director standard. James Wan (Director of the Saw franchise) hadn't done much but he and friend created a film set in one room and it kicked off the Saw series since then he has moved on to directing many well known films such as: Fast and Furious 7, Aqua-man, Insidious and many other films but, both Furious 7 and Aqua-man both grossed over $1 billion which made him the 8th director to hit that milestone.

A producer is also a high prioritised role within the film industry they oversee everything within a films creation, they're involved with pre-production, production and post production they have to plan and coordinate everything from selecting the script, writing, directing and editing and they also have to arrange the finances for everything within the film. A big surprise to most people is that the producer actually makes more money than the director and that the producers has to select and hire a director for the film they're planning to release.

Since the internet has become a massive part of the modern world, society has become more advanced than most people would have ever thought. Since the internet and technology has become far more advanced over the last two decades films and TV shows have been able make the fictional become more realistic and enjoyable for the audience and brings them back for more movies or another season of a show. With all of these advancements, recruiting has become much easier within industry as it has had to adapt with every small change within technology and the internet and it has become easier to recruit crew members for a film as you could message them directly or locate a crew member through an agency to see who they can recommend for a position. being recruited will be a huge benefit because you will get to meet new characters and crew members, which will broaden your horizons and will open doors for your future and give you more opportunities for future projects this will also give you more experience. Since the internet makes it easier to connect to people as there are multiple social media's that you can use, such as: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and many more. Social media is also a great way to learn many things about a person, like their interests, relationship status this makes it easier for an interview over a social media rather than face-to-face because you will get to know them a lot quicker and easier.

Every company have the same forms over employment the main and best type being full-time which is when a employee works for a certain amount of hours per week after being agreed upon by the employer. Full-time workers gain access to benefits such as: sick days, maternity leave health insurance and many more. A great thing about being a full-time worker, is that when you leave work on a Friday evening and you will return the following Monday and they know that they'll be able to retire in the future, full-time make people feel safer with their career because they would have to do something pretty bad to lose their job.

After full-time we have part-time which is where you ill only work a certain amount of hours over a certain amount days in a week. Students are the biggest advocates for part-time work as it gives them access to experience, money and leaves them time for their studies it also depends on the schedule of the students to see how flexible they are and if the employer can agree to the hours. Part-time also doesn't cause as much stress because you do't get deadlines for the day you just have to get done what you can.

After part-time, we then have zero hour contracts which is where an employee does not work a certain amount of hours rather they work when they need to or are asked to by their employer. Zero hour contracts are not always a good thing because you wouldn't be gaining that much experience since you would not be working enough to gain experience as well as this, with not having a regular work schedule, this can lead to laziness as well as poor living conditions as you might not receive that good of pay and since you won't be working enough your income will be very low.

SA - (4)

Since social media has become a necessity to modern day life, it is no surprise that the media industry will use social media as a tool to locate, meet and hire new clients and use it to find new and upcoming talent e.g an editor, singer or actor etc. One thing that many employers look for when trying to recruit a new team member, is to look at some of their past work to get a feel for how this person operates and how skilled they are an or see if they have the potential to be better. A show reel, is a perfect way for people to show of their work, this can include anything that a person has been involved with such as, directing, acting, writing, editing or producing etc, people normally include their best projects, this gives any employer a visual representation of what they are capable of and what they can bring to the table for any future projects.

SA - (5)

The final step for getting a job and probably one of the most stressful is a job interview, this is when you get to meet your potential boss face-to-face so they can get a feel for what type of person you are, the best way to make yourself appear like a good choice for the job is to be formal and be presentable, it also helps to be punctual and appear to be eager. Ways to do this is to be on time for your interview, dress respectfully and appear confident. Show that you have experience by giving somewhat detailed answers to show that you have the knowledge about the job you're applying for, this shows the employer that you're willing and able to do whatever it takes to get the job and prove your worth.

SA - (6+7)

Appearing employable is what everyone's aim should be, some of the ways to do that is to gain more experience within your chosen field as well as improve and adapt your skills to fit with the environment that you're working in. Another good way to show your experience is to update your CV as often as you can after you finished a project so that future employers can see what experience you have gained and if you have potential working with them in the future. Updating your CV and putting yourself out there as often as you can proves that you're ambitious and determined to get where you want to be within the industry, doing all of this shows your employer that you're someone to keep around or keep in the books as a first person in their next project and it doesn't prove you're better then everyone else it just proves that you're skilled in your field and have a talent for what you do. In my personal experience, whenever there is external project or access to go o a trip to do something within industry which will gain me experience, I always put my name forward as I know that any little experience will help prepare me for the future with any and all projects I hope to a part of within the film industry, specifically in film directing and or producing or editing.

Various structures confide within the industry, these structures have been put in place to make it so that all jobs big or small all have their impact on anything they're involved in. A great example is radio which in the modern day, is on the decrease because of the increase of the use and rising popularity of social media such as Facebook and Twitter etc. A part from social media, radio is also being pushed out by music apps as well such as Spotify which is perhaps the largest music streaming app on the planet and it also makes it makes it easier to find new music uninterrupted if you have paid for premium. Radio is the audio version of the news which uses visual as well as audio this is better than the news in ways for example, you can listen to the radio anywhere whereas the news you mostly need to be around TV. Both radio and TV are public service forms of media because they're designed to entertain as well as inform, instruct and guide people with everyday life.

SB - (2)

Many people underestimate the magnitude of the media industry, the USA is the leading country with media they hire millions or even billions of employees. In the modern day, the media industry has a massive grossing income with companies bring in billions of dollars every year. Perhaps the largest film company in the US is Disney who owns so many of the modern film companies such as Marvel and Lucasfilm (Star Wars) all of these companies bring in billions of dollars every year which in total probably make Disney trillions of dollars which is no surprise to think that Disney is one of the largest companies on the planet and everyone knows the name Disney.

SB - (3+4)

Products that get released in the modern day have to be unbiased, appealing to everyone and user friendly so that everyone can experience the product in their own way. Promoting a product in the modern day is risky because you have to show how user friendly it is and try to not make it offend anyone which is difficult in this era because people get offended easily by anything and everything. You have to be careful what you're promoting because of all of the "groups" in the world, from religion, race and many others. Some of these groups care deeply about their beliefs and nationality and there has been a lot of offensive stuff have been said and done over the years in adds so it is understandable why many people get offended easily so adds have to be as friendly to the public s the product they're trying to promote.
